But if you actually ask either side how well they understand what the other person is doing? The answers can get a bit uncomfortable.

Usually, the communication is purely functional at best. It boils down to basic depth calls and routine shift handovers. The driller drills while the geo logs, and everyone just gets on with it. But here's the reality: that gap is quietly costing you money and causing unnecessary friction.

The geo community is actively trying to close the gap

The interesting part is that the geoscience community is actively pushing to get field geologists more fluent in actual drilling.

The Australian Institute of Geoscientists (AIG), for example, has been running seminars specifically designed to get field geos more fluent in what actually happens at the rig, and having sat in one of those rooms, the level of engagement from the geo side is genuinely surprising.

The relationship goes both ways

That only gets you halfway. The other half is completely on your side.

How well do your drillers actually communicate what they're seeing? When conditions change downhole, they need to explain their adjustments. When a method decision gets made on the fly, the geo must hear about it and understand why.

A lot of the friction just comes from two groups having different training and no shared language for talking about what's happening in the ground. Communication is key, and here are a few practical ways we see the best teams fix it:

Narrate the decisions: Encourage your drillers to explain what they're doing. Give a quick explanation on why they changed the bit or what the rig is telling them. A geo who understands the reasoning is far easier to work with than one who is just guessing.
Brief them on what to watch for: When a driller takes the time to point out what to watch for in the next 10 metres, that creates better data.
Share the actual "why": This one is for the geos. Take the time to be present at the rig and actively share the purpose of the drill hole. Why are you drilling it? Explain why good data matters and where the Plod data actually goes once it leaves the site. When the crew understands why it matters, drilling outcomes naturally improve.
Talk about the ground: Before the bit even starts turning, both sides should be actively discussing the expected ground conditions. If everyone is on the same page about what they're about to drill into, there are way fewer surprises and a lot more collaborative problem-solving when things get tricky.
Ask questions and give real answers: The best sites are the ones where drillers and geos are constantly talking. Encourage your drillers to ask the geos questions and make sure they're giving solid answers in return.
Treat the handover as a touchpoint: End of shift handovers are a massive opportunity to build trust and collaborate.

The bottom line: you’re on the same team

At the end of the day, you're all on the exact same team with shared goals. Quality data always starts with two things: good systems and a good understanding between the driller and the geo.
