We all know the "hero."

It’s the driller or supervisor who swoops in to save the day, fixing a logistical mess at 4pm on a Friday through sheer force of will. From the head office, everything looks fine. Costs are tracked, contractors are moving, and the daily report lands in your inbox on schedule.

But under the surface, the operation is being held together by the individual grit of one capable person.

It’s easy to mistake a "great person" for a "great process." However, as CorePlan’s Principal Product Manager Victor Cha says, if your outcomes change depending on who is sitting in the seat, your process isn’t doing its job. In enterprise mining, relying on "rockstars" is a single point of failure, not a competitive advantage.

The hidden cost of the "Hero"

The problem with relying on heroes is that they hide reality. When you have one exceptional person manually duct-taping a drilling program together, they are actively (and often unintentionally) masking the inefficient process underneath.

You think you have a streamlined operation, but what you actually have is a dependency.

We see this across the industry. In one instance, a regional manager was single-handedly carrying an entire LATAM operation. When that individual left, revenue dropped 40% because there was no repeatable system to backfill them. The moment the hero exits, the cracks in the program turn into chasms.

As Victor puts it: "Heroism is not strategy."

You can’t scale work ethic

Why does the "hero model" always break? Because modern exploration programs have become too complex for even the best individuals to manage alone.

Today’s programs involve tiered approvals, complex compliance cycles, and vast geographical distribution. Trying to manage all of that via spreadsheets and "standard" emails requires superhuman effort. While you can find people with a great work ethic, you can’t clone them.

"You can’t scale someone’s work ethic," Victor explains, "but you can scale how the work gets done."

If your program relies on "good people doing the right thing" and hoping for the best, you’re gambling on personnel.

Real scale should be (a little) boring

If heroism is the symptom of a broken process, what does a healthy one look like? Surprisingly, it looks a bit boring.

"Real scale should actually be a little bit boring," Victor argues. It means you get the same controls and the same results, regardless of who is on shift.

Moving from people-driven success to process-driven success means building a system where the "average" day is still excellent because the workflow stands up on its own. The goal isn't to hunt for more unicorns to run your sites; it’s to implement systems that make every partner consistently effective.
